When one vessel is in backwash mode the remaining vessels ensure the selected flow. We recommend the following maintenance schedule for your VORTISAND® cooling tower filter: Once a day, a technician should take the reading on the backwash counter and cooling tower filter inlet/outlet pressure, and enter the information into a logbook. We have included a suggested log sheet at the end of this section. Once a week, a manual backwash should be initiated. During the backwash cycle, the opening and closing of the valves should be verified. In the Spring and in the Fall seasons, verify the media level by opening the Victaulic coupling at the back of the cooling tower filter. Please refer to your Operation and Maintenance manual for complete procedure. Recent studies carried out using laser particle counters have shown that 85-95% of the particles present in the recirculation water of either closed loops (evaporator circuit) or open loops (cooling tower filter circuit) are less than 5-micron in size. It is known that the water from the cooling tower absorbs most dirt and airborne contaminants surrounding the tower. Microorganisms and particles of that size produce fouling which can result in scale build-up and algae contamination. They also become food and support for bacteria.? Recirculation flow, airborne contamination source, volume of water, make-up water quality... all these operation parameters are considered in sizing the proper cooling tower filter.
